They say the goal behind very goal is happiness. I feel that this is so true, however there has been times in my life that I have had the tendency to forget that this is my primary purpose. I have at times of being unhappy in the pursuit of a goal, believing in the illusion that when I achieved the goal, that then I would be happy.
I had a realization recently that much of the unhappiness I have experienced in my life, has been as a result of comparisons or judgements in my mind. For example when I was in a place of having little money, I could see that I was comparing myself to somebody who has a lot of money and the direct result in many cases was unhappiness. Another example was when I was not in a relationship and I was single, my mind went into the story of comparing when I was in a relationship and to other people who are in relationships.
I see that my mind loves to compare and judge. It compares my so-called “good” emotions to the so-called “bad” emotions”. It compares when I am alone to when I am with people. It compares to what it is like to have money and to what it is not.
If you look at your life, is there any part of it which you are unhappy about?
Is it your job, partner, money situation?
What are you comparing this part of your life to?
How is it serving you to compare that part?
Just by becoming aware of where the unhappiness is coming from and how it is serving you, it is then that you can allow for the opportunity and the choice to let go of the comparisons and have more peace of mind and happiness in the situation.
I feel that just by becoming aware of our comparing mind, is one small step in the overall journey to peace and happiness.
I have found it useful to practice 10-20 minutes of meditation daily and just become aware of the comparisons that are happening in my mind.
The greatest gift you could ever give to another person and to the world, is your own happiness. We owe it to ourselves, our spirit, our souls, our humanity, to be as happy as we can be. Happiness doesn’t live in the future, it lives in the here and now.
As always I would love to hear any feedback or comments.
Namaste,
TW

Lovely post. My goal in life is peace – inside and out. Happiness is so subjective. Inner peace and love, is happiness. Throughout the world you can see people who are extremely poor – with very little food or shelter….but they are happy. While the wealthy, who may spend their riches on fancy items, are very unhappy. I have always said that happiness comes from within. Your post is a lovely reminder. Thank you!

TW – Great post! Self-awareness is the key to realizing our full potential. We must turn our attention within and find what concepts like success, contentment, and joy mean to us (and no one else) before we can fully embrace peace and happiness. Thanks for sharing! Blessings, Sloan

thanks for the post, our thoughts definitely need minding to so that we can automatically cancel those judgmental thoughts with positive affirmations when they arise, so that they don’t snowball into something more. One of my favorite affirmations is: ‘i release any feelings of competition and comparison. i simply do my best and enjoy being me’

I remember when I was much younger years and newly married my friends and peers seemed to have the bigger houses, cars and vacations. However, the optics did not match the reality. The marriages broke up, the mortgages were not being met and the charge cards were not being paid off. I learned never to compare because it is a waste of mental energy. Thank you for reminding me about this powerful message.

I think we each find some reason or another to justify our ‘unhappiness.’ I think that basically what you’re saying here is that we perceive lack. The perception of lack always leads to unhappiness. For me, personally, I’m not a comparer. I tend to get my unhappiness from resentment. I know when I’m harboring it, but have difficulty letting it go. For example, I am resentful that my family has all abandoned me. I am working on letting it go, but again, this comes back to a feeling of ‘lack.’ I feel as if I ‘lack’ a family. Perhaps I can envision love and forgiveness?! Just some thoughts on my own personal journey, and how we each perhaps, justify our unhappiness through a perception of some sort of lack.

truth Warrior, I thank you for liking my post. Your blog seems very inspiring. It reminds me of the though I have had regarding trying to live life, instead of trying to look for the best. This society teaches us to be ambitious and have the best cars, most paying jobs, best diet, etc, which is not necessarily bad, but I think it is better to simply being and enjoy what we do have.

Great post. I see it as a waste of time to worry about what others have and you don’t. Because as soon as you get what you want, you want something else. It’s a natural thing but if you take your energy and focus it on the beautiful things you do have that are free, it truly brings happiness. 🙂

So true – it’s part of society’s programming to have us want more, to feel inadequate. On the other hand it is dissatisfaction that drive improvement, without it we would still be living in caves. So I guess it’s a double edged sword! 🙂
