At the moment in my life, I am at a crossroads in regards to what to do with my career. As I mentioned previously, there is a certain amount of uncertainty to where I am and what direction to take. I really want to listen to my heart, that deeper part of me, to know what the next step is to take. At times it is hard to listen, as I can see that my mind is busy with thoughts about the past and the future.
As part of the exploration process, I am doing the morning pages, as a way to connect to who I am and to listen to my heart. The morning pages is a stream of consciousness that I write whereby I write 3 pages of whatever comes up for me in that moment. It has been an interesting process so far 🙂
We all have an artist within, however many of us, myself included have neglected that part of ourselves because of various commitments in our lives such as family, getting an education etc. We also have been conditioned by those around us and society that we need to do this, that we should do that and we have to do this. The truth is that we really don’t have to do anything we don’t want to do.
What would our lives be like if we choose to do what we wanted to do and really listen to that voice within?
I believe we would all be living much happier and peaceful lives. We would be feeling excited and enthusiastic about life. We would feel connected to ourselves and would be much more effective people in the world we live in. Life would feel easy because we are being true to ourselves because we are living from our core.
I have been doing the morning pages for a short while now. At times I have been resistant to doing them however I am determined to continue doing them. As a result of doing them, I have gone back to playing the guitar and singing. I hadn’t played or sang for a while before that. It feels really good to play and sing. In the future I would like to play in front of an audience some day. 🙂
In my experience, the morning pages are a tool to help you to listen to yourself. My own intention for doing them is that I would like the answer to come from within in regards to what direction to go in my life.
A quote that I really love by Anthony De Mello is –
“ A nice definition of enlightenment is no longer marching to the drum beat of society, but dancing to the music that springs up from within.”
As always I would love to hear any thought or feedback you may have.
Namaste.

Wonderful post, thanks for sharing ! I too recently embraced the Artist within me, and I feel so at one with myself, like I’ve finally come home at last. Each day I’m excited to get out of bed with all the exciting possibilities that lie ahead to be created. When I don’t have a client, I’m busy making jewellery, or some craft item or other, or painting, or writing. I’ve never felt such joy. I discovered that life has no meaning until we give it some ourselves, and we can do that by embracing the things we love to do, and stop making excuses as to why we can’t do them now, and start finding ways to make it a reality now. I wish you every joy on your adventure, as you become more and more alive with your music ! Heaven on Earth ! Pure Bliss ! Much love and light to you ! Namaste, Paula

What a heartfelt post. I started following my dream in June last year and am happier than I have ever been. My writing is an intrinsic part of who I am, I am just sorry I didn’t do it earlier.

I am so excited about this piece because I agree with every little bit of it. We must not conform to the patterns of this world. We should rather be transformed by the renewal of our minds.
There really is an artist within us. We find joy and fulfilment whenever there is a chance to express it.
I love to play the guitar, I love to dance and now I am seriously loving writing. Sometimes it seems tough to survive while working against the norms of society, but the results are eventually rewarding, satisfying and fulfilling. Lovely post!

What lovely observations about life. It’s quite true: there is often a disconnect between what we are told we need, and what we truly do need. Air, water, shelter, food, certainly…but those more amorphous necessities to our spirits are harder for other people to understand. Following your bliss is not always so easy as some make it sound, but everyone should allow at least some of that bliss into our lives every day.
Thanks for posting!

I remember doing the morning pages back in 1996. I bought the Artist’s Way while in Japan – there because coincidentally I was playing the guitar with a band! 🙂 Doing the morning pages was instrumental in me discovering a lot about myself. Recently I started back to journal on a regular basis and it is helpful. Writing always surfaces truth for me and it is my hope that it does the same for you. The more your write the more you exorcise all the noise and get to the pure distillation of your direction. I remember hearing Marianne Williamson talk about when we ask God for direction that it’s not that we don’t hear what God is telling us but we don’t LIKE what God is telling us. This might indeed be the case when what you’re supposed to do pops up for you but then you feel resistance. You get fearful. You procrastinate creatively, saying you need to do MORE research, or you need more time or you need to talk to a few more people. Just be on the alert and be honest with your self. I wish you the best and know that you will do whatever you need to do to take next steps.

This so resonates with me. I quit a full-time corporate job last year and reconnected with drawing and writing after a gap of almost 20 years. A lot of writing on my blog is about my journey since then, and I wanted to especially connect you with this post which was about my attempt to find a new identity for myself: http://wp.me/p2x7VR-ap I hope you enjoy it!

It’s so hard, to take the time out and write something, to create something new. But then the artist inside you manages to survive and at times comes up with something so beautiful and awing, that you could write on forever, read on forever. That was a great piece. 🙂

I totally agree, to listen to the voice within and I am finally doing just that. I am single and think it’s good for me. I can do what I want, when I want and live the life I was born to lead, that of course includes writing in a massive way. I have nominated ou for the Super Sweet Blogger Award http://quirkybooks.wordpress.com/2013/01/17/happy-to-be-super-sweet-super-sweet-blogging-award Congratulations.

Greetings Truth Warrior.
Morning pages are a lovely way to get to the heart of your creative soul and self. I like to practice yoga in the morning to aid this process along with morning pages. At the end of the day I recommend keeping a journal. The two processes can provide you with creative impetus and space. Being at a cross roads is very exciting with all the opportunity that this brings. I wish you well and a good journey in truth.

Sometimes it booms, sometimes it whispers, but we always hear it, that voice that somehow, someway, always leads us down the right path – not easy, not always crystal clear, but right? Always.

As a life time singer songwriter (with 1 CD) I can say that music as a form of self expression, personal therapy and at times pure escapism into our musical heart-scape is one of life’s greatest gifts to me. Keep playing, jam with others who are better than you (they’ll help you improve), perform in front of friends, set a goal to paly an open stage somewhere, be daring and walk a little on the wild side it will make you feel alive like few other things.
Listen to the music, listen to the space between the notes (that’s where life happens) and sing the song that is being written in your heart, that is the authentic you!
