Hello. It has been a while since I have wrote anything on this blog as I have been slightly distracted by life. I was writing my morning pages this morning when I got an inspiration to write an article to inspire others and myself.
In the last few months, I have been in a job. The work is in a sales orientated environment where there is pressure to perform and achieve targets. At times I feel stressed in this environment as I feel there is little opportunity to express who I am and be the person who I want to be. There have been many days when I have been leaving work feeling drained because my heart and my soul isn’t in the work that I am doing. I am doing this work as a means to be busy, pay the bills and to be out there doing something. I would love to be engaging in work, which makes a statement of who I am.
To be honest I have been struggling to listen to my heart because my head has been so busy with thoughts of what I should do with my life. At times I feel I am just going around in circles searching for the magic answer. I have been coming up with options like going away traveling for a while, doing a creative course like acting, music or photography, start my own business in something that I love, write a book or maybe just live like a hippie.
I feel that I am lucky in my life right now in that I have no commitments in regards to a mortgage, kids, a partner and I am not in debt. A lot of people have said me that the world is your oyster and that you are in an opportune time to do what you want to do and to do what you love to do…..
I suppose the question for me is what that is?
How can a person become clear or know what that is?
How can a person follow and trust their heart?
As always I would love to hear any feedback, suggestions or stories about your own journey…
Namaste,
~ TW

Hi TW, nice expression of what people go through many a times. For some briefly; for few, it just takes more time. But, what’s life without going through such patches ? Its like the adjustment phase & looking beyond… Why not you write, if you can express & create a career out of it ? Wishes for you to find answers, soon…

I am in a similar situation, but I have made some leeway. I was in banking for almost 20 years and went back to college to be a Teacher (thinking I could make a difference in the world) and graduated at the age of 41. Two years of teaching in public schools showed me that because of the system, it’s unlikely that I can make much difference at all, so I was back at square one. Luckily, my degree came in handy, allowing me to work from home scoring online exams for ETS, and I sub a few days a month. It took a long time to find this opportunity, but I knew in my heart something was out there for me, and I didn’t give up. I’m about 1/4 of the way through my first book, and a friend and I may start a small business in essential oils. While this is an excellent start, I, too, feel there is much more that I can’t quite grasp. So, in my experience, it’s been a slow journey, but I feel that the upcoming year may hold some answers…It is indeed hard working in a field where your heart’s just not in it. It’s almost like exchanging your soul for a paycheck.

On this subject ( what do I want to be when I grow up ??)
there are hundreds of books and thousands of blog posts available
from the so called experts who want to motivate their own self esteem.
Just go with the flow.
Think, feel, meditate; body, mind and soul and most importantly
nudge, don’t push, be willing at any moment to give up who you are
to be who you can become.
P.S. don’t ever grow old.
Love, hugs and blessings…ME and the Boss

You talked about doing the morning pages. Your writing should provide clues. I think that journaling is a way of letting your life speak. The other part of that equation is in being obedient and following through as you did in writing this post. I think we spend far too much time deliberating over the what. You already know that what you’re doing is taking MORE out of you than putting in. So these are my thoughts:
Choose any one path that you identified – write a book, travel whatever. Just choose. The journey is not going to be perfect but make a decision to take it. Pay attention to what is coming from inside you, the clues that you’re being provided with moment by moment and you will always take the step meant for you to take on that journey.
The job you’re in is speaking volumes that it’s not you. Who you are is being stifled. Go with what’s surfacing for you and do those things. The destination is never what we expect but without one we’d all just wander aimlessly. So make a decision and BEGIN! 🙂

I’m hoping that I have something to offer as I’ve been through this stage and am currently coming out the other side in training as a Sports Therapist.
I am an Aerospace Design Engineer by trade, but I know now that that was simply something that I ‘fell into’ as my father was similar, and so I had a genetic predisposition in this direction… I found it quite easy.
However, in recent years I had the increasing feeling that I was in the wrong place, and to cut a long story short, eventually saw something that made me realise what I really wanted to do.
I think in essence, what a person searching for this answer should do is to look for the things that makes them smile, cry (not with sorrow, but with joy, elation, pleasure, satisfaction for yourself and/or for another) or laugh. Anything at all that we find amusing, entrancing, bewitching, unusual, entertaining, heart-string tugging… anything at all that makes you smile, or stare open-mouthed in wonder…
I strongly believe that if you learn to understand this about yourself, you will be close to finding whatever it is that satisfies your spirit… whatever it is that you should spen your time doing… a job that you would be happy to do for free.
I wish you the best of luck in your search!

Wow, what great and inspirational responses you have received. I noticed that you wrote:

I have learned to really pay attention when “shoulds” come up for me. Where is the should coming from? Is it mine or someone else’s should? There is usually freedom in finding the answers to those questions.

I really like what you said in regards to paying attention to the “shoulds” that come up for me? I feel for me it is a combination of shoulds from myself and from others. Some of the shoulds I have right now are;
I should have my life together…
I should know where I am going…
I should be independant…
I should be married…
I should have a house…
I should be happy…
I should be grateful for where I am..
I should please other people…
I should get a serious job…
I should settle down…
I should be strong and courageous in myself..
I should be out there living my life to the full..
I should be successful..

What an honest, exploratory post! I respect and honor your journey. I like how you admit you are at your current job for what seems like all the wrong reasons. I understand your soul searching/desire to do something really meaningful with your life but not being able to put your finger on it. Have you asked yourself what you could do all day long without feeling that drained feeling at the end of the day? And also, what would you do if money was absolutely no object and no one would judge it? The answers to both of these questions will provide you some insight into what your life’s purpose is. If you think your answers are selfish or can’t possibly benefit anyone but yourself, consider this: God’s ultimate purpose for all of us is to be happy and spread love. Wouldn’t you agree that if you are doing what you absolutely love, that others will feel your energy? Good luck and Namaste

I was a little sad for you when you expressed that a career in a sales environment is not creative or meaningful for you. I have worked in retail sales for many years, and I have found that it is a goldmine for self-expression where I can creatively direct the customer and possibly even influence the customer in ways other than purchasing product. I have written a manuscript that outlines ways for success in sales and compares modern-day sales techniques to those used by Jesus Christ as he developed his ministry. Good luck to you! Sales is not all that bad! Make the most of it!

Each one of us has been endowed with unique strength or talent. To find real Joy/Happiness, we need to exercise that while serving others.
This journey will also help us revive our lost relationship with Him.
For example, I’m doing the following after I quit corporate world few years back:
1) I have been following one spiritual path and having the association of like minded people
2) I’m having plenty of time for writing, travel and helping others that I enjoy
3) I also like to motivate others by writing or helping them become Financially Free (using my expertise)
4) Spending time with family..my little daughter
Also, I like to lead a life of change, each day should be different (with some discipline of course).
Now I know what am supposed to be doing on this planet i.e. the purpose and my unique contribution to life.
So you just have to pursue what you love while being practical as well like financial aspect of it.

Being a fitness fanatic and eating a vegan diet, I came to yoga a couple of years ago. This provided me the opportunity to look inward after I’ve been looking outward for so many years trying to seek the best path for health and wellness. Inner peace, doing things more consciously, being loving to oneself and connecting with spirit are all coming full-circle to make us whole. Thank you for following my blog. What a question! The only thing I have to offer is that, for many of us, I’m not sure there is only one thing, a right answer; that if we take a particular path we’ll be happy and fulfilled forever. Every life has its own seasons – perhaps the only thing to do is consider what kinds of things make you happy now, and try and spend as much time as you can doing those things until another season comes and you feel you want to try something new. Whatever you decide, good luck – and remember that it doesn’t have to define you forever!

I enjoyed your article and related to the part about going around in circles. For the past week I have felt like I was floundering with little direction. I have several things I am working on at want time and want to complete them all now. Of coarse its the journey that matters and my own fulfillment is important to me. I have soaked up allot of negativity lately and just need to get spiritually charged. Your positive writing helps thank you.

Lovely to read this as you sound just like me two years ago! I made the decision to save to go travelling and do some of the things on my wish list and it has completely transformed my life! I have just received my visa to emigrate to Australia and follow my dream of living aboard. I am not quite there yet, with the ideal job, but I am making small steps to constantly follow my heart. 🙂
