They say that there are only two guarantees in life; death and taxes. This is true. The truth is we never really know what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next year, however so many of us, myself included, look for certainties in our lives.
As John Allen Paulos said; “Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.”
At the moment in my life, there is an amount of uncertainty in regards to the direction I want to go in my career. At times I feel anxious about it, however I would like to invite the possibility of being happy and excited about the uncertainty, instead of being fearful of the unknown. Fear can be limiting and blinding, where as excitement opens our eyes to the possibilities around us.
I have been involved in a career in sales, which I have been successful at. However, it no longer fulfils me at an emotional, spiritual or personal level. I feel that my time is complete in regards to this career, as it is not making a statement of who I am. I no longer feel it in my heart to pursue this career and I want to move in a direction, which is true to my values, interests, personality and skills.
I want to become clear on what I truly want and still be happy while I am on the journey of getting there.
Many of us experience fear when we don’t know what is going to happen next. I can see that this is the ego part within me that wants to know, however the soul part of me doesn’t really care. When we choose to be fully present in the here and now, we don’t need to know what is going to happen. We trust that the moment where we are now is perfect for what it is.
In my life now, I would like to invite the possibility of becoming clear on what I would like to create from a career perspective while at the same time being happy and peaceful about the uncertainty.
Here are a few thoughts I have come up with in how we can choose to be happy about uncertainty:
* Choose to be in the present moment
* Accept where we are right now
* Believe that it is okay not to know
* Say that I choose to love and accept myself exactly as I am and where I am
* Have faith that from the unknown comes the knowing
* Focus on what we can control in our lives
* Know that everything is constantly changing
* Say I choose to let go and allow the way to be shown to me
As always I would love to hear any feedback or comments you may have.
Namaste,
~ TW

I am at the point now where I live with some fear. For six years I have taken care of family. Now that my brother has been placed, I need to work for money. I have placed an ad as a caregiver, with no response. It is scary to me. I cling to my hope and know that for now I am safe, but safety disappears through time without hard work. I don’t know what is going to happen to me, but I have to have faith it will work out in the end

one thing I have found is that we can often change how we approach our existing job to make it more fulfilling.
the other thing is if we control our financial obligations, we are free to do as little or as much as we choose.
good voyaging, and the journey is as important as the destination.

TW,
This post resonates with the experience of so many of us. We know that our only constant is change and that we cannot know what is to come. And still we seek to chart a path.
To be strong, open, and ready is the way, I believe. You’ll embrace what comes, you’ll live a genuine life. You’ll have a “career” that feels right to you. This will all happen not according to some plan but as a necessary product of living this way moment-to-moment.
A very thoughtful post. Thanks.
Tom

So timely! While I’m not changing careers, I live with uncertainty and am often uncomfortable with it as if it shouldn’t exist…that I should know. This is not wise – tantamount to swimming upstream. Thank you for your insight 🙂

I work in sales, as you do. May I ask whether there are aspects of the sales profession that you still feel connected with? Such as the opportunity to meet new people and build relationships? Just a thought, but if it were me in your place, I would consider staying in sales and switching the commodity I offer. Just a thought. Your situation is sincerely in my thoughts and the prayers of my heart. Good luck!

Anxiety of tomorrow is movement of thought. So long we identify with thought, we remain in movement and every movement is anxiety. If mind (read thought) is still their is no anxiety. Rest are all words, a clever creation of mind.

This is a great post! Yes, uncertainty is really all that is certain. Everything (in this material realm) can, and does, change. You touch on the Buddhist idea of “not knowing” as well as hint at the quantum physics uncertainty principle. All we can know for sure is the present moment (now), and all we can control is ourselves and how we choose to act or react in the moment.
Good luck in your career change…as one thing ends, it opens the way for other things to come into your life that are right and best for you!

Great post. I graduated from university in July and sometimes I’d feel content about not working but then a lot of the time I’d find myself trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and pressuring myself into thinking that I should know and be pursuing my dream. However I am now very happy and content with life and know that the universe delivers to you what you truly want and need to feel happy and fulfilled in all aspects, you just have to be open to receiving and that’s through appreciation of every moment and full faith. My focus now is that this year I will be kick-starting my career and making money with the help of the universe.

My fiancé and I just had this same conversation last night. I had the fear as I know which career path I want to take, I have experience, a relevant degree but it’s just not happening for me yet. We want to save for a house, a family, a wedding etc but at the same time, by doing this I feel like I’m missing out on now. I feel like the days are passing me by and I’m terrified of wasting them. I never want to wake up and think… where have those years gone?! We decided that a good new years resolution would be to live in the now and do what makes us happy today without wasting time worrying so much about the future. As I am travelling, have just finished university, am working a job that’s not my ideal, everything in my life is uncertain except one thing. I have never been more certain about anything than I am about wanting to spend the rest of my life with my fiancé. I am thankful that we are doing just that and we have decided to put a hold on saving for the future and go on an adventure around Southeast Asia as that is what we really want to do right now. I can’t wait!

Your transparency and honesty in describing your situation is inspiring! I think I’ve been where you are (I made a radical career change late in life) and it can be very uncomfortable at times. Something I found helpful at the time was to have people with whom I could explore my deepest questions, concerns, and ideas. Their support and encouragement (and occasional reality checks) was critical to my development.
Something I did NOT have at the time was much of a plan. I didn’t have a strategy to discovering my future direction. I posted an article last October that, while it was directed at organizational change, also fits personal change. You can see that post at http://wp.me/p2kaWb-zZ
I hope you find it helpful. I’ll pray for clarity and focus for you!
